The Saints have come marching in to the Transfer Tavern tonight and there seems to be mixed opinions about the future of Van Dijk.
Reports have re-surfaced in recent days that Virgil Van Dijk could finally be on his way to Anfield to join Liverpool.
The defender apparently is trying to force through the move with the Saints’ hands pretty much tied at this point.
In our landlord’s opinion, he doesn’t think letting van Dijk go would be a bad move on Southampton’s part.
The Saints can now pretty much set any asking price they want, within reason, and in this weird age of football, Liverpool will probably pay it.
The number was at £50 million when rumours first started flying around, but now Klopp is coming back in for the defender, Southampton could probably slap another £10 million onto that price tag.
At the end of the day, Van Dijk has five years left on his current deal at St Mary’s so if Liverpool refuse to pay the price then Southampton can keep him.
Obviously, it’s not good to have a player who really doesn’t want to be there within your ranks but they will be entitled to do just that should they not be pleased with the offer.
However, Southampton should let Van Dijk go for somewhere in the region of the original asking price, and then pump that money back into their squad, get a more well-rounded side and hopefully for them, have just as good a season as they did last time out, if not better.
