Southampton supporters have been drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side go down 5-2 to Tottenham at Wembley on Boxing Day, thus extending their winless Premier League run to seven matches.
Mauricio Pellegrino’s men went into their clash with the North London outfit having picked up just three points from their preceding six games, and winning one of their previous ten league clashes to see them slip towards the bottom three. And the Saints’ poor run of form continued at the national stadium on Boxing Day as a hat-trick from Harry Kane as well as strikes from Son Heung-min and Dele Alli secured a comprehensive victory for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, with efforts from Sofiane Boufal and Dusan Tadic not enough to prevent the South Coast side suffering a ninth Premier League defeat of the season.
Thus, there have been many despondent Saints fans in the Tavern in recent times, yet their mood may be improved by a recent report from The Daily Telegraph, which suggests that Pellegrino’s side are seeking to bolster their attacking ranks with the signing of Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge in January.
The 28-year-old has struggled for gametime at Anfield ever since Jurgen Klopp took over as manager back in October 2015, with just nine Premier League appearances, of which only five have been starts, to show for his endeavours this season.
And with the likes of Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, and Mohamed Salah consistently producing the goods, it doesn’t look like the England star will get much regular football in 2018, yet reports suggest that Southampton are seeking to offer him a route out of Liverpool in January.
And with the Saints clearly in need of attacking reinforcements, and Sturridge evidently in need of regular minutes to make England’s World Cup squad, it’s a deal which could well take place in next month’s window.
Landlord’s verdict: Daniel Sturridge has endured a testing time at Liverpool since Jurgen Klopp arrived at the rear end of 2015, a spell which has thrown his World Cup hopes this summer into huge doubt.
The 28-year-old has managed just five Premier League starts so far this term and doesn’t look like dislodging the likes of Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, and Mohamed Salah in the starting eleven anytime soon, thus throwing his future at the club into doubt.
Yet 64 goals in 133 games for Liverpool is still a prolific and ultimately impressive return, and Mauricio Pellegrino’s Southampton are reportedly seeking to offer him a route out of Anfield next month to give him the minutes he needs to rediscover his best form.
And with the Saints struggling in front of goal this term with just 20 goals from their opening 20 Premier League games, it’s a move which appears to be in the best interests of the club and the player.
