Southampton are reportedly interested in QPR starlet Eberechi Eze, according to The Sun.
The 21-year-old has started the campaign brightly for the R’s, scoring in their dramatic 3-1 comeback win over Wigan Athletic on Saturday.
So far this term the attacking midfielder has averaged 1.8 key passes per game, alongside 2.6 successful dribbles, per WhoScored, clearly showing what a threat he is for Mark Warburton’s men in the final third.
The Sun report that the Saints are keen on the England U20 international, with the Premier League side’s chief scout, Ross Wilson, in attendance at Loftus Road last week to watch him play against Swansea.
With the transfer window now closed for business until January, Southampton cannot make a move for Eze until the start of next year. They are thought to be keeping tracks on his progress until then, however, with the intention of making a potential move for the attacker in five months’ time.
Having got off to a dire start prior to Saturday’s 2-0 win over Brighton – losing their opening two league games against Burnley and Liverpool – the Saints now look a much brighter outfit.
Sofiane Boufal and new signing Moussa Djenepo both came off the substitutes’ bench to make an impact at the Amex, with the latter opening his account in style with a beautiful curling effort ten minutes after the interval to put the Saints ahead in East Sussex.
Things are starting to look up for the southerners, and adding a player of Eze’s class and potential in January would only further strengthen what they have in the midfield area.
Ralph Hasenhuttl is building a fresh, young squad at St Mary’s and the potential addition of Eze would certainly be in keeping with what the Austrian is looking for.
With the likes of Angus Gunn, Danny Ings, Nathan Redmond, Che Adams, Jack Stephens and James Ward-Prowse all in the club’s current starting XI – all of whom are English players under the age of 28 – the Saints are clearly trying to nourish homegrown British talent, and Eze fits that bill perfectly having progressed through the ranks at Millwall before joining QPR in 2016.
