Southampton secure new deal for Yan Valery

There is no denying that Southampton sit in a rather precarious place in the Premier League and their final eight matches will be nervous affairs for everyone involved with the south coast outfit. Ralph Hasenhuttl has managed to improve the team significantly following his December arrival, however, the final couple of months will be where he and his squad are truly tested.

The Austrian has turned to youth at times during his spell, with some of them making starring contributions in games, and it appears he and the Saints have acted quickly to tie one of their impressive talents down to a new contract.

What’s the News?

According to the club’s official website, Yan Valery has signed a new deal that will extend his stay with the St. Mary’s Stadium outfit until 2023.

The 20-year-old has excelled as a member of Hasenhuttl’s first-team over the past few months, having scored two goals and made himself an integral member of the squad.

The Verdict:

The news that Valery has signed a new long-term deal with the club will have surely delighted everybody as it is quite clear that he is just another success story from Southampton’s Academy ranks – with which they are famed for producing top quality youngsters.

Having already established himself as the first choice right-back goes to show how highly-rated he is by Hasenhuttl and with the confidence that playing regularly will bring, the sky appears to be truly the limit for the 20-year-old.

He dislodged Cedric Soarers from the position in December, who had been a favourite under Mark Hughes and a defender who has plenty of experience – including a Euro Championships winner’s medal with Portugal in 2016.

Despite still being far from a finished product, Valery already possesses key traits such as agility and pace that allow him to run forward into attacking areas, whilst his tackling and decision making means he is rather solid at the back.

Southampton clearly have an exciting future ahead of them where the 20-year-old is concerned and he will be key for the Saints in the final eight games of the Premier League season.
