Southampton supporters have been pretty downbeat in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side throw away a two-goal lead to only end up drawing 2-2 with Watford in the Premier League on Saturday.
Mauricio Pellegrino’s men went into their clash at Vicarage Road off the back of a much-needed 1-0 success over Fulham in the third round of the FA Cup, although their winless Premier League run stood at nine games ahead of Saturday’s encounter. Yet they looked on course for a first win since November as a James Ward-Prowse brace gave them a 2-0 half time lead, yet goals from Andre Gray and Abdoulaye Doucoure, the latter a hugely controversial one, secured a point for Marco Silva’s men, and kept the pressure firmly on the shoulders of Saints boss Pellegrino.
Consequently, there have been many frustrated Southampton fans in the Tavern in recent times, although there may some good news around the corner if a recent report from The Daily Telegraph is anything to go by, which suggests that they are seeking to get a deal done ‘quickly’ to bring Guido Carrillo to St Mary’s.
The 26-year-old currently plays his trade at Monaco and has done so since 2015, in which time he helped the club win the Ligue 1 title and reach the Champions League semi-finals last season by netting eight goals in 31 games in all competitions.
However, with regular gametime hard to come by at the Stade Louis II, the Argentine was subject of speculation in the lead up to the January transfer window, with Southampton one side reportedly keen on the forward as Pellegrino sought a reunion with Carrillo following their spell together at Estudiantes.
And reports suggest that a reunion could be in the offing shortly as the Saints are seeking to get a £15 million deal done ‘quickly’ for the 26-year-old, and given their shortage of goals this term, it’s a deal which could well pay dividends for both the club and the manager in the second half of the season.
Landlord’s verdict: Guido Carrillo helped Monaco win Ligue 1 and reach the last four of the Champions League last season, but it appears that his time at the Stade Louis II is coming to an end.
Southampton are reportedly keen on landing the 26-year-old as they seek much-needed attacking reinforcements, and it’s a deal they are reportedly hoping to get done deal ‘quickly’ as they fight to stave off Premier League relegation.
Manager Mauricio Pellegrino knows all about the forward following their time spent together at Estudiantes, and with the Saints boss under pressure at present, it’s a move he simply has to get right if he is to move the club away from danger, and indeed keep his job.
