Southampton supporters here in the Football Transfer Tavern are confident of another decent Premier League season, especially if reports from the Express are to be believed.
The publication claims the Saints have made an offer for Celtic’s defensive star Virgil van Dijk, for a fee believed to be in the region of £7million.
The offer for the Dutch defender was made before Celtic flew out to Qarabag for the second leg of their Champions League qualifier, with Ronald Koeman keen to get a deal tied up before Southampton open their Premier League season with a fixture against Newcastle at the weekend.
Celtic boss Ronny Deila is desperate to keep hold of the 24-year-old, who has been a key member of their title winning side over the past two seasons.
However he is also aware the defender is keen to test himself in England, and the prospect of linking up with fellow Dutchman Koeman on the south coast may well be too tempting to turn down.
Southampton are no strangers to signing players from Celtic, having made moves for goalkeeper Fraser Forster and midfielder Victor Wanyama over the past two years.
A small bunch of Celtic fans deliberating the deal over a game of darts here in the Transfer Tavern are not happy about this particular news, and are starting to get seriously annoyed at Southampton always poaching the club’s best players every transfer window!
