Southampton are all set for another busy summer, and with no new manager in place following the sacking of Claude Puel, it’s bound to be a nervy time around St Mary’s at least in the coming weeks.
The Saints fans here in the Tavern were happy with last season, but for Puel, an 8th place finish and a cup final was seemingly not enough.
Our landlord has been sat in the beer garden this week with the Southampton fans though, having some in depth chats around the summer window and if the club can avoid selling their top names again, as well as being able to bring in new talent.
One player who our gaffer thinks could be a shrewd signing is current Aston Villa winger and England under-21 international Jack Grealish, who is valued at £4.25m by Transfermarkt.
The versatile midfielder is still regarded as one of the top young talents in the game, especially outside of the Premier League, and Southampton have never been put off by signing players from the second tier.
Grealish finished the season well for Villa, and is a clear talent on his day. A move back to the Premier League with a club like the Saints, who enjoy putting their faith in young players, could be the making of him.
The Villa man can look to the likes of Nathan Redmond for inspiration, and if Southampton were to come knocking for the Englishman, then it would be a move he would surely find too hard to turn down.
