Southampton’s fans in the Transfer Tavern are painfully waiting for their side to lift their spirits.
New boss Mauricio Pellegrino has so far added just one player to his books this season.
Poland youngster Jan Badnarek completed his move last month and is expected to provide competition for Virgil van Dijk and Maya Yoshida.
That’s ‘provide competition’ and not ‘replace’.
Van Dijk has been heavily linked with a move away from the south-coast and reports claim the Dutchman has told the Southampton hierarchy that he wants out.
If Van Dijk does leave, the Saints faithful will need to be appeased.
One signing who could lift the spirits is Manchester City outcast Samir Nasri.
It is thought that Nasri is not in Pep Guardiola’s plans this season, that’s despite travelling to America with City for pre-season.
The midfielder who spent last season on loan at Sevilla is awaiting the results of an anti-doping investigation.
Should Nasri be cleared, Southampton could capitalise on the Citizens’ desire to get him off their books.
Whether the Saints can match the 30-year-old’s extortionate wage demands is unlikely.
However, a loan deal could see City cover a percentage of the wage, just as they did during Emmanuel Adebayor’s spell at Tottenham.
The two time Premier League winner can be deployed on the wing or as a number 10 and when on form, Nasri is a superb addition to any side.
Saints fans, we want to hear from you! Could Nasri make you tick? Or is he just a primma-donna? Let us know in the comments!
