Southampton fans in the Transfer Tavern can finally relax after they survived the drop and secured Premier League status on the final day of the season.
Despite a 1-0 defeat to Manchester City, results elsewhere meant Swansea were instead relegated to the Championship. After a respectable eighth place finish last year, Claude Puel was dismissed and replaced with Mauricio Pellegrino. However, the Argentine struggled immensely, and Mark Hughes was appointed to keep the Saints up.
After successfully avoiding the drop, Hughes really should be given the job on a permanent basis. If he is appointed, adding goals must be his number one priority. Manolo Gabbiadini and Charlie Austin have failed to find the back of the net consistently, therefore, a new forward must be signed in the summer.
One option the Saints could explore is Shakhtar Donetsk forward – Marlos. He has just one year remaining on his contract and is valued at £9.9m by Transfermarkt. The Brazilian has enjoyed a stellar season in Ukraine; netting 21 goals and 16 assists, he would be the perfect man to bolster the Southampton attack.
Capable on either wing or in a number 10 role, his versatility is a huge bonus for Hughes. The 29-year-old is a quick and tricky forward with an eye for goal. Marlos could be an astute purchase as the Saints look to challenge for Europe next year.
