It looks set to be another summer of departures at Southampton, as the South Coast club brace themselves for a continued onslaught of bids for their prized assets.
Saints fans here in the Transfer Tavern are always great to have around, as despite a mass exodus every summer, their club always finds a way to replace those lost to bigger budgets and optimism remains high as a new influx of fresh talent joins the club.
Having parted ways with manager Claude Puel after a solid but uninspiring season, Saints fans are interested to see what the new man will bring, and they have discussed potential transfers with our landlord over a refreshing pint at the bar.
One topic that has been frequently coming up in recent weeks regards the future of Virgil van Dijk, and with the Evening Standard reporting that Chelsea may prioritise a move for him this summer, our landlord thinks that the Saints should only sell on one condition. He thinks that the club simply must demand Kurt Zouma in return.
The 22-year-old could be on the move this summer, with a season-long loan move away from Stamford Bridge potentially in the offing given his lack of game time last year.
Prior to suffering a long-term injury, Zouma was one of the Premier League’s best central defenders. Powerful, strong in the air, great with the ball at his feet – the Frenchman really had it all. However, he struggled to gain a foothold in the first team last season, and that is unlikely to change next term too.
Van Dijk is clearly the complete package, but the Saints could do far worse than to bring the Frenchman in, be it on a short-term or indeed long-term deal.
