The resident Saints are feeling uninspired by their season so far under Mauricio Pellegrino and they are becoming concerned that they will face a shock relegation to The Championship unless their results dramatically improve in the coming weeks.
At the beginning of the season, very few would have predicted that Southampton would be in the relegation zone after 24 matches, but that is the situation they find themselves in as the January transfer window draws to a close. Considering the success that Claude Puel is enjoying in his new role at Leicester City, the Southampton board might be wishing they could turn the clocks back and change their decision to dismiss the French manager.
However, pondering what might have been will do nothing to help Southampton avoid the drop this season, but the acquisition of new talent this month will certainly aid the Saints in their bid to beat the drop. Southampton are in need of strengthening in various areas of the pitch, and following the sale of Virgil Van Dijk they certainly have the funds from which to make the necessary improvements.
But January signings are often made on impulse rather than as a result of meticulous scouting and planning, so Pellegrino must ensure that he does not waste his war chest in an act of panic.
With that being said, Southampton would be wise to consider bringing players on loan to the club before committing to a permanent contract, and one player who could be available is Chelsea’s youngster Charly Musonda. The 21-year-old recently signed a professional contract with the Blues after impressing in two Carabao Cup appearances in which he claimed a goal and an assist.
Musonda, rated at £4.5m on Transfermarkt, is a tricky winger who possesses the ability to dribble directly at his opposite number with pace, and his presence in the squad should force Nathan Redmond and Dusan Tadic to step up their game due to the increase in competition.
The young Belgian should be available for a 6-month loan move considering his age and lack of importance to Chelsea’s first-team at the moment, so Pellegrino should bring him to the South-Coast this month to bolster his attacking midfield options.
