Southampton will head into the 2017/18 campaign with another new manager and renewed optimism around St Mary’s with regards to where they can finish in the Premier League.
The Saints had a very decent campaign under Claude Puel last year, but it was deemed not enough and he lost his job, being replaced by Mauricio Pellegrino just a few weeks ago.
This past week has seen the Saints sell striker Jay Rodriguez, who has overcome serious injury, and this news has led to the Southampton fans here in the Transfer Tavern engaging in some serious discussions about bringing in a replacement.
Our landlord thinks there are plenty of potential new forwards out there, but one man he thinks could hold the key is Nottingham Forest striker Britt Assombalonga.
The powerhouse forward is one of the very best in the Championship, and he overcame serious injury last year, finishing the season with aplomb and firing Forest to safety on the final day.
There is little doubt that Assombalonga could be a revelation in the Premier League, and a move to a club like Southampton could be the making of him. With the likes of Dusan Tadic and Nathan Redmond providing the ammunition, Assombalonga would thrive on the goalscoring opportunities presented to him.
Southampton need goals to improve on their campaign last season, and the Forest man might well be the answer if they could convince the Reds to part ways with their star man.
