The Southampton supporters in the Transfer Tavern are somewhat distressed at reports linking Cedric Soares with a move to Stamford Bridge.
As Chelsea’s pursuit for a wing-back intensifies, Southampton’s Cedric Soares has been listed as one of their latest targets.
According to the Evening Standard, the Blues are poised to submit a £20m offer for the 25-year-old, who has testified his status as one of the Saints’ leading stars since his arrival in 2015.
He has proven to be an exceedingly dependable figure for the Saints, and while they’ll be eager to keep him on the South Coast, they could be powerless to thwart the lure of a club of Chelsea’s repute.
With this in mind, our landlord has opted to look at players who Mauricio Pellegrino could choose to replace the Portugal international if he leaves.
One such player is a free agent, Bacary Sagna.
The 34-year-old was released at the end of last season by Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, and despite his age, his qualities are undeniably evident.
The Frenchman made 24 appearances in all competitions for the Citizens last season, and his arrival would provide Pellegrino’s side with critical experience.
Arsenal’s former defender is particularly high when contesting aerial duels and he’s also an accomplished passer of the ball.
In addition to his overwhelming experience at club level, Sagna has also been capped 65 times by France, further demonstrating his suitability to play at the highest level for another season.
While his presence wouldn’t provide Southampton with longevity, our landlord believes that they’ll be signing an established first-team defender.
