Southampton supporters have been drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern over the Christmas period after seeing their side fail to win a Premier League game in December, the latest of which a 5-2 thumping at the hands of Tottenham.
Mauricio Pellegrino’s men went into their clash with former boss Mauricio Pochettino and his Spurs side off the back of drawing 1-1 at home to Huddersfield Town, and they extended their winless run to seven matches with a disappointing display at Wembley. A hat-trick from Harry Kane as well as strikes from Son Heung-min and Dele Alli secured a comprehensive victory for the North London outfit, with second half efforts from Sofiane Boufal and Dusan Tadic far from enough to stop the rot for under pressure Pellegrino.
Thus, there have been many despondent Saints fans in the Tavern in the last few weeks, and there may be more frustration to come for those suffering Southampton supporters if a recent report from Sport (via talkSPORT) is anything to go by, which suggests that the South Coast side will miss out on reported target Luciano Vietto.
The 24-year-old has been playing his trade at Spanish giants Atletico Madrid since 2015, but has struggled for regular football with just 38 appearances for Diego Simeone’s men, scoring just three goals and laying on five assists in the process.
The Argentine spent last season on loan at fellow La Liga outfit Sevilla in a bid to resurrect his career, but has failed to force his way into Simeone’s plans this term, to the point that Southampton were reportedly linked with a move for the forward in January.
However, recent reports suggest that Vietto is set to join Sporting Lisbon on loan next month, in what looks set to further frustrate our already suffering Saints supporters.
Landlord’s verdict: Luciano Vietto simply hasn’t made the grade at Atletico Madrid since making the move in 2015, although somewhat resurrected his career with ten goals in 31 games for Sevilla on loan last term.
However, the 24-year-old hasn’t forced his way into Diego Simeone’s plans this term with just four La Liga starts to his name, and as such speculation has been building regarding his long-term future at the Wanda Metropolitano, with Southampton one side reportedly linked with his services.
Yet it looks like manager Mauricio Pellegrino is set to suffer another blow in his bid to turn things around at St Mary’s, as reports suggest that Sporting Lisbon will secure Vietto’s signature next month on a loan deal until the end of the season.
And with the Saints clearly in need of attacking reinforcements, this is unlikely to delight our resident Southampton fans ahead of the January window.
