Southampton swoop on Bundesliga assist-machine would keep Pellegrino in a job

Southampton couldn’t have started the year off in better fashion, with Liverpool stumping up a record £75 million fee for central defender Virgil van Dijk, a player that had hardly appeared under boss Mauricio Pellegrino since attempting to force a summer move through to the north west.

Saints fans here in The Transfer Tavern are excited, but also wary of the large sum currently filling the coffers at St Mary’s, with some concerned that the money may not be utilised effectively by their manager. The sum has the capacity to bring an entire starting XI to the club if used in the correct manner, although with clubs likely to inflate their fees when the Saints come calling, fans can expect perhaps five quality additions to their squad.

Debate at the bar stretched long into the night, with fans offering up their views as to where their money should be spent, and who the club should look to recruit this month. The club have suddenly found themselves embroiled in a relegation battle due to the form of their bottom-half rivals, and lie clear of the bottom-three by goal difference alone. Big changes are needed this month if the Saints are to pull clear, and the agreement over one final pint of the night is that more creativity needs to be added to the side. Fans want quality without having to blow the bank, and our landlord can’t suggest a better player than Philipp Max of German side, Augsburg.

The winger has proven sensational in the Bundesliga this semester, with the 24-year-old proving to be a real wizard from the wing. His crossing ability is unparalleled in the division at this stage, with the player registering a remarkable nine assists to lead the charts in the German top-flight. His form has helped the Bundesliga side to mid-table at the halfway stage of the campaign, and clubs across Europe will consider a switch for the player this month. Just the single goal to his name may lead fans to question his credentials, but should the player address this issue at Southampton, he could become a real star. Pellegrino should look to tie up a deal for the young star in the coming weeks.

Saints fans, does Max sound like the type of player you need? Let us know!
