Although the game might not necessarily be defined as a must-win, Southampton would certainly be doing themselves a favour by picking up three points against Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon when they host the Cherries at the St. Mary’s Stadium.
Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side have found it difficult to grind out the victories in recent weeks, however, they will know three points against their south coast rivals will go a long way in ensuring their place in the Premier League for another season.
What’s the News?
According to a match preview by the club’s official website, Southampton have doubts over the fitness of Ryan Bertrand and Stuart Armstrong for their home encounter with Bournemouth.
The left-back has been struggling with an ankle problem and will be checked ahead of the game, whilst the former Celtic midfielder will require a fitness test following his hamstring concern.
Jannick Vestergaard will continue to be absent on the sidelines as he continues to try and overcome a groin issue.
Southampton have to find a way of being able to finish off their matches, although Bournemouth certainly are not going to be giving them a free pass on Saturday afternoon.
And, the news that Bertrand and Armstrong could both be unavailable for the meeting could be potentially concerning for Hasenhuttl and his squad’s chances of picking up a win.
Both players are hugely experienced and will know what it takes to grind out victories at difficult times and could have been ideal players to have on the pitch for the type of occasion the Saints will find themselves up against.
Although they still have a home game against Huddersfield Town to come on the final day, an away day at West Ham United follows their encounter with the Cherries this weekend. With the Hammers being so hit and miss in front of their fans this season, Southampton must do all they can to pick up the three points on Saturday.
