Southampton to make free agent their first summer signing?

sidwell.jpgSouthampton fans in the Football Transfer Tavern aren’t really enjoying this summer so far and it’s probably only going to get worse.

But according to the Daily Mail, Southampton may have a small reason to smile after they became the latest side to be linked with a move for former Chelsea and Fulham midfielder Steve Sidwell.

The player is a free agent after his contract at Fulham came to an end when the club were relegated from the Premier League last season.

Sidwell was one of the clubs’ stand out players despite their dismal season and he’s caught the eye of a number of Premier League outfits.

West Bromwich Albion, Stoke City, Hull City and Queens Park Rangers have all been linked with the 31-year-old but Southampton have become the latest to show their interest.

The Saints’ face a tough forthcoming season at St. Mary’s having already lost their manager and star striker Rickie Lambert.

They also have a fight on their hands to warn off some of the Premier League’s top clubs as they cast their eyes over England international pair Adam Lallana and Luke Shaw.
