But new Saints boss Ronald Koeman could soon give them something to smile about following his arrival at St. Mary’s.
The Daily Mirror report that Koeman is eyeing Italian striker Graziano Pelle who has scored 50 goals in his last two season at Feyenoord – Koeman’s last club.
The 28-year old is seen as the perfect replacement for Rickie Lambert who joined Liverpool last month capping an incredible few years for the former Bristol Rovers striker who is currently on World Cup duty.
It is believed an £8 million deal could be enough to secure the former Sampdoria player’s signature with Premier League newcomers Leicester City also interested in Pelle.
But England’s disastrous exit from the World Cup group stages could speed up any English transfers with Luke Shaw and Adam Lallana both set to leave for Manchester United and Liverpool respectfully.
