Southampton want Gary Cahill

Southampton are keen to add to their defence once again this winter as they continue to struggle to keep goals out.

Their downfall at the back has not helped their cause with winning games in the Premier League, with Mark Hughes’ side having won just one game so far as they sit just outside the relegation zone.

The Saints have already shipped 11 goals in their seven matches so far and will meet Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea on Sunday.

And, according to a report by the Daily Mirror, it appears they have identified a Blue to add to their ranks to try and improve things.

It is claimed Southampton are keen to add Gary Cahill to the team in the winter, as the defender has admitted he may have to leave Chelsea to get regular first-team football.

The defender, who has won everything possible with the Blues, has hinted recently that he could remain in London until the end of the season after captaining the side in the Europa League clash against MOL Vidi on Thursday night.

The Verdict:

Cahill would certainly help to improve the Southampton defence immediately and should be a signing that they should look to make.

The former England international is a defender that is a leader on the field and his arrival could be the difference to the Saints and whether they are playing Premier League or Championship football next season.

However, with a possible U-turn on his stance of leaving in the imminent future, it remains to be seen if Hughes can convince the £13.5million-rated enforcer, as per Transfermarkt, him to join them in January should he make the offer for him.
