The Southampton fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern have had just about enough of relentless reports linking their top players away from the club, and are delighted to see reports coming in regarding a summer signing.
According to The Sun, the Saints are monitoring a deal for Sassuolo forward Gregoire Defrel as they look to replace injury stricken No.9, Jay Rodriguez.
The new boss on the south coast, Mauricio Pellegrino – who was announced as successor to Claude Puel last week, is supposedly ready to give Defrel, who is rated at £7.65m, a chance in the Premier League but will have to fork out £18m to land a deal.
The 26-year-old enjoyed a decent season in Italy last term, scoring 16 goals in all competitions, seven more than the next best at St. Mary’s where Charlie Austin top scored with a measly nine.
Our landlord reckons that Pellegrino, should he land Defrel, will have a much better time of it in front of goal than his predecessor who often chopped and changed his attacking options.
Saints fans, we want to hear from you! What do you make of Defrel? Are you confident Pellegrino is chasing the right man to replace Rodriguez? Let us know in the comments below…
