The Southampton fans are feeling nervous in the Transfer Tavern ahead of their season-defining clash against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium tomorrow evening.
Mark Hughes takes his struggling Saints side to Leicester tomorrow for a fixture which has the potential to determine the outcome of their season. There’s absolutely no doubt about it, Southampton are currently stuck in a rut which is threatening their Premier League status, and they are almost out of time to dig themselves out of it.
The arrival of Mark Hughes on the south-coast seems to have sparked some life back into the club, but positive results continue to elude them as they enter the final stretch of the season. Unfortunately for Southampton, they simply cannot afford any more slip ups this season, as anything less than three-points will effectively relegate the club tomorrow evening.
Southampton were vastly improved during their clash with Chelsea at St Mary’s last weekend, but they failed to capitalise on a 2 nil lead as they conceded 3 goals in quick-succession to further dent their survival hopes. Despite the result, there were encouraging signs for Hughes to take away from the performance, and one of those positives was the performance of Ryan Bertrand who impressed in a left-wing-back role against his old club.
Southampton’s captain of late embarked on a brilliant run down the flank to set up Shane Long’s opener and he generally looked composed in possession and defensively solid throughout proceedings. And if Southampton are to take anything away from their clash with Leicester City tomorrow, they will need Bertrand to lead by example once again and kick-start his side’s survival bid at the final hour.
Southampton are a club on the brink, but if Bertrand can bring his a-game to the King Power, defuse the threat of Riyad Mahrez and positively influence the game in the final-third, they will have a fantastic opportunity to come away from the fixture with a priceless victory.
