The Southampton fans in the Transfer Tavern are excited by recent reports which link them with a move for Jack Wilshere, although they are refusing to get too optimistic about completing a potential deal.
According to the Daily Mirror, Southampton have joined the likes of West Ham and Wolves in the race for the signature of Jack Wilshere (valued at £18 million by Transfermarkt) this summer. With no official announcement made regarding his future at Arsenal, it seems incredibly likely that he will depart the Emirates, and Mark Hughes must take full advantage of the situation if that indeed proves to be the case.
Wilshere has threatened to develop into a world class footballer since he broke onto the scene as a teenager at Arsenal, but thus far he has failed to live up to his enormous potential. Although there’s no doubt he has failed to match expectation during his career so far, Wilshere still has plenty to offer in the Premier League for the vast majority of clubs in the division, so Southampton’s interest is certainly well-placed.
The Saints became overly reliant on Mario Lemina to provide creative spark from the centre of midfield last season with his silky dribbles and extensive range of passing, but he ultimately struggled for consistency despite showing flashes of brilliance.
However, Wilshere’s arrival could be exactly what the Gabonese midfielder needs next season, as his creative instincts and ability to single-handedly dictate the tempo of proceedings would ease the burden of responsibility which Lemina carried last season.
Together, Wilshere and Lemina could form a formidable partnership combining technical quality with power and determination to give Southampton a solid midfield base from which to build their season around.
With clubs queuing up to sign Wilshere there’s no doubt Southampton will face a tough task in convincing him to move to the south coast, but they should not be fazed by the competition and submit a generous contract offer in order to secure the services of an ideal partner for Lemina.
