Although Southampton will have to cautiously look over the shoulder for a little longer, they must feel they are in a good position to remain in the Premier League. Ralph Hasenhuttl has been nothing short of outstanding during his time at the St. Mary’s Stadium and has given the club a real lift.
It might still be a little too earlier for the club to identify potential transfer targets given that their place in the top-flight is far from guaranteed at the moment, however, that does not appear to have stopped one media outlet from asking the Saints boss about a possible player he could try and sign in the summer.
What’s the News?
German magazine Kicker (via Sport Witness) conducted an interview with Hasenhuttl recently and asked him about the possibility of bringing Andre Schurrle to the south coast, although the Austrian manager refused to discuss the idea.
“I don’t comment on names. We keep an eye on the market,” he said.
Schurrle is expected to leave Fulham at the end of the campaign with their relegation to the Championship all but confirmed and return to Borussia Dortmund, although the Bundesliga outfit are expected to make him available.
Although things did not quite go to plan for Schurrle at Fulham this season, he could still be an attractive addition for Southampton to consider in the summer.
The Germany international has plenty of experience of playing in the Premier League, given that he was fairly successful during his time with Chelsea and he could bring a new dimension to Hasenhuttl’s side.
The 28-year-old is the kind of versatile forward Southampton need in their team as he would be a player that would be able to help improve their attacking play and help them to create more opportunities in the final third of the pitch.
Hasenhuttl may prefer younger players, however, Schurrle is hardly a veteran, although he could be the man to help mentor and teach some of the club’s rising stars as he has a winning mentality.
If Dortmund are willing to send him out on loan for another season, considering he was supposed to be with Fulham for two, then it might just have to be a deal that Southampton look to make happen in the summer.
Southampton fans, do you think Schurrle can add something to the club if you were to stay up? Do you think he would be able to improve the team in the final third of the pitch? Join in with the discussion below by sharing your thoughts with us.
