Real Madrid have ruled themselves out of the running for Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas. There were rumours of a possible £40 million bid coming Arsenal’s way in the summer but Madrid General Manager Jorge Valdano has been quick to deny there was any serious interest; “We have never made a bid for Fabregas, we talked about with Arsenal – there is a very good relationship with Arsenal and we do not want any misunderstanding.”
Arsene Wenger will be pleased to hear at least one of the threats posed to try take his talisman away has been extinguished. There are doubts as to whether Fabregas would ever have been interested in a move to Madrid. Born and raised in Catalonia as a Barcelona trainee, I doubt he would consider playing for Barcelona’s fiercest rivals as an option.
Barcelona will probably never give up on the player they consider their own however and more renewed interest is expected in the summer. It maybe a transfer that the player will have to force himself, if Barcelona want to get their man. Arsenal remained strong last summer after the World Cup and it will be no different this time around.
For now though, he is an Arsenal player, captain and playmaker and will lead them out come Wednesday night against his former club. He will be hoping it is not such a one sided affair this time round.
