Aston Villa are a club that has continuously signed strikers in an attempt to find a consistent goal scorer. Some forwards include John Carew, Emile Heskey, and now the Belgian starlet Christian Benteke. Aston Villa is a side known to sign immense strikers with Carew and Benteke being no exception.
John Carew is a talented Norwegian striker who spent a majority of his career at Aston Villa. The Norwegian is approximately 6ft 4 inches and weighs nearly 200 pounds. Although Carew was blessed with the physicality and size many would deem necessary for the Premier League, he was unable to replicate the form he had displayed at previous clubs. Carew managed to make 113 appearances for Aston villa and scored 37 goals. He endured an injury plagued career at Villa Park which caused Aston Villa to sign strikers to fill his void.
Christian Benteke was signed by Aston Villa on August 31st, 2012 from Racing Club Genk in the Belgium League. Despite his young age, Benteke stands at 6ft 3 inches and had successful loan spells in which he scored on multiple occasions. His most successful spell was his last season at Genk in which he scored 19 goals in 37 appearances. This incredible goal return for a young striker earned him a move to Premier League side Aston Villa where he would earn the love and respect from fans and spectators alike. The Belgian has currently featured 76 times and has scored 32 goals.
Unlike Benteke, Carew was never able to win over the fans and football pundits during his spell in the Premier League. Benteke whom has struggled recently has age on his side and can further develop while Carew was expected to hit the ground running. Unfortunately, his spell in England was his last after playing in numerous leagues all over the world.
Carew is now fully retired, looking back on his career, how does he compare to Aston Villa’s current front men?
