I’d booked a day’s holiday off from work at the Football Transfer Tavern, for yesterday.
I only did it because I wanted to watch, what I thought would be, the greatest game of this Champions League campaign. However, the Manchester City versus Barcelona first half was so underwhelming that I cancelled my day’s holiday and jumped behind the tavern’s bar to work.
The big games rarely deliver; the tavern punters continually get their hopes and aspirations up hoping to see the likes of Bayern Munich and Real Madrid play out a 5-5 draw.
The Liverpool customers are adamant that their side, under Brendan Rodgers, are now the ‘Great Entertainers’.
I don’t think the customers, who support the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea, would, if they were being honest, disagree with that but the Liverpool regulars are, at times, an insufferable bunch.
The Liverpool mob piped up again after City’s approach against the La Liga giants was dubbed too defensive: “You wait, when we are back in the Champions League next season. We will wipe the floor with Lionel Messi & co.”
Yeah, but that’s just it. You aren’t in it this season.
So, until then…
