On seeing the latest viral image passed to our landlord here in the Football Transfer Tavern, one of our punters quips that now Roman Abramovich has won the Champions League and stepped off the managerial merry go round, he seems a little bored. Bored enough in fact to sanction the release of official Chelsea crisps!
The club may well want to establish themselves as one of the best teams in the world – not just in terms of trophies, but in terms of the way they play, and that is understandable.
What we are a little bit bemused at however, is the idea that not only will releasing official club branded crisps help on their path to doing this but the belief people will actually want to buy them!
One of our punters comes up with a rather novel reason as to why the club decided to get into the snack trade – maybe the FFP rules are finally catching up with them and a quick buck needs to be made!
Real Madrid may have their own official crisps, but as our punters note, they also had the ‘real Ronaldo’ on their books for quite a while, and given his size now, we can see why they thought it could be a lucrative idea.
Perhaps Chelsea are simply trying to raise their profile – or just fancy a snack. Either way, as our landlord points out, it is far better for Abramovich to get caught up in a whim releasing crisps than it would be for him to start using his special app to scout for players and buying another £50 million flop! It is getting to that special time of the year after all!
