At the end of last season, the Football Transfer Tavern punters predicted that this season, Tottenham Hotspur would be challenging for the title and that Liverpool would be vying for fourth place.
How wrong they were!
Despite spending Gareth Bale’s world record transfer fee plus a few million more, Spurs find themselves down in ninth place and eight points behind bitter rivals Arsenal.
This, as you can imagine, has led to a few harsh words being exchanged between the two sets of fans, in the tavern.
Liverpool fans have a short memory though; they’ve been giving Spurs fans stick for their current league position but it is only now that the Merseyside club have really established themselves again.
Luis Suarez’s return has catapulted Liverpool to second place with his previous misdemeanours seemingly already forgotten as his name is regularly chanted by the Anfield faithful.
The Uruguayan’s performances haven’t gone down well with the Spurs regulars, who see his goal scoring exploits as a continual reminder of what they’re missing.
I heard one punter mumble into his pint glass: “We should have given them Bale and got Suarez. Instead we signed this bunch of no hopers.”
Fickle bunch, ey?!
