One year on from the Olympics, what have we learnt? Not much probably, except that hindsight is a wonderful thing.
If only we could rewind a year, one simple swap could have earned Team GB another gold medal, and the England football team a place in the semi-final of the European Championships!
Last summer whilst Tom Daley was struggling to earn a medal at the Olympics, Ashley Young was busy crying out for a change of sport.
The Manchester United winger has become better known for his diving over the past 18 months than his football, a fact that was evident once more during Saturday’s 2-0 win over Crystal Palace.
Before Manchester United fans in the tavern become defensive, even David Moyes has had his say noting that the former Aston Villa winger needs to cut out his simulation antics.
Moyes told ESPN recently: “I’ve always said I don’t like diving. He deserved to get booked. I don’t want any of my players diving, I don’t want anybody doing it.
“If you look at it (the penalty), the boy definitely throws his leg out and Ashley’s leg goes into it. I think Ashley has put his leg into it. But I will definitely say to Ashley that it is not what I want.”
If only Young had represented England at the Olympics last summer instead of the national football team.
Gold would have been virtually guaranteed, and Roy Hodgson’s side would have been spared the dreadful performances that culminated in a penalty miss in the shootout defeat to Italy. I’ve never seen Tom Daley play football, but i’m willing to bet he would have been just as good if not better than Young on the left wing!
