For years, punters have asked if they could bring their pets into the Football Transfer Tavern.
Naturally, due to Health and Safety regulations – and the fact my landlord hates animals – he has refused to buckle under the pressure…until last night, that is.
Manchester United fans were talking of not coming into the tavern to watch the Red Devils’ Champions League quarter-final first-leg versus Bayern Munich – clearly they expected their beloved United to be embarrassed by the holders.
So, in order to drum up business, my landlord relented and came up with an idea for ‘pets that look like footballers’ competition.
Some of the entries we had were brilliant:
A British bulldog that looked like former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Andy Reid.
A peacock that looked like Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.
But the winner was a goat that resembled Chelsea’s Andre Schurrle.
I know what you’re thinking…who has a peacock and a goat as a pet?!
Anyway, it certainly worked as the tavern was heaving come kick-off. However, one customer clearly wasn’t interested in the goings-on at Old Trafford…
