Our punters here in the Football Transfer Tavern are having a laugh at the viral we have been shown which displays the dressing room of Tottenham’s Thursday night Europa League opponents, Anzhi Makhachkala of Russia.
The Dagestan-based side had become one of the biggest spending sides in the world bankrolled by billionaire owner Suleyman Kerimov with his side looking to sweep all beside them on a global level.
Now, after seeing his finances take a huge hit and becoming disillusioned by his overpaid foreign stars, Kerimov held a fire sale this summer and got rid of the majority of his top earners, notably new Chelsea duo Samuel Eto’o and Willian.
His coach and their backroom staff all followed the star players out of the exit door and now the side sit in 16th place and bottom in the Russian Premier League. Not exactly the form of would-be world dominators!
But now Kerimov has walked away, the signs of squalor are all too clear in his absence. In what looks like the dressing room of a modest Sunday League outfit, the Tottenham players didn’t even have a facility to hang their shirts last night during their comfortable 2-0 victory.
For players like Jermain Defoe and Kyle Walker, the plain four walls of Anzhi’s dressing room would have acted as a throwback to a previous era where they were cutting their teeth in youth football!
We can’t imagine they showered after the game either!
