Tottenham have joined Wigan in the hunt for Espanyols midfield playmaker Javi Marquez. Wigan had been thought to be favourites to sign the in-form midfielder from the cash strapped La Liga side but, with Redknapp now showing his cards would the prospect of European football prove to much for the youngster.
Marquez, 24, has came through the ranks at the Catalonia based club and is now considered one of there most valuable assets. He has committed himself fully to the cause at Espanyol but has now admitted publicly that if he did have to leave his boyhood club, then the Premiership is where he would like to ply his trade.
The fact the Spurs are blessed in the attacking midfield department with van der Vaart and Modric the current incumbents of this position, would probably mean Marquez being a back-up player which would be hard to take for a player who has his sights on breaking into the Spanish national set-up.
Wigan on the other hand would be able to accommodate the scheming midfielder straight into their starting eleven and with Roberto Martinez at the helm this would surely aid the Spaniards claims for a first team berth.
For the time being it looks like the Barcelona born youngster will be staying with the Periquitos but, with there financial status becoming ever-more perilous they are likely to cash in on their prized asset sooner rather than later.
