Despite making one of their best ever starts to a Premier League season, Tottenham find themselves on the outside looking in on the Premier League title race yet again.
While they’re only five points off Man City, in truth, it looks as though Spurs will once again be contending for another top-four spot. Due to all the rumours surrounding the stadium, Mauricio Pochettino’s future and their poor performances in Europe, it looks as though the side is suffering under the pressure.
Over the summer, Spurs failed to bring in any new recruits and so far, that lack of reinvestment has taken its toll on the side. In midfield, specifically, Spurs lack depth and are in desperate need of a fresh player to come in and add some more dynamism.
With Moussa Dembele out injured, Spurs will now have to rely on Eric Dier to be that defensive shield in front of the back four.
Following the news of Dembele’s injury, plenty of Spurs fans announced their relief at having the England international back in the side.
While he will fill a void left by the Belgium international, Dier is a terrible player and should be nowhere near Pochettino’s side.
The figurative, new car smell has worn off and the clumsy former Sporting Lisbon man now resembles a stumbling hindrance in the Spurs side. Tottenham need midfielders that are dynamic and can take the side to the next level – Dier just simply isn’t that.
He may at times be able to put in a crowd-pleasing tackle but with the ball he’s terrible and doesn’t possess the technical talent needed to be a top player. In January Spurs must look to replace him or they could well come up short in the race for Champions League football.
