Tottenham supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern over the Christmas period after seeing their team thump Southampton 5-2 at Wembley on Boxing Day, a result which keeps them just a point behind fourth place Liverpool in the Premier League table.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men went into their clash with the South Coast outfit having won three of their preceding four league matches, the most recent of which an impressive 3-0 success at Burnley just a few days earlier. And they recorded back-to-back victories as a hat-trick from Harry Kane as well as strikes from Son Heung-min and Dele Alli secured a comprehensive win for the North London club, with efforts from Sofiane Boufal and Dusan Tadic not enough to prevent Spurs from an 11th league success of the campaign, and sixth at Wembley.
Thus, there have been many upbeat Tottenham fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are likely to be intrigued by a recent report from Marca, which suggests that Pochettino’s side are interested in Villarreal striking ace Cedric Bakambu.
The 26-year-old made the move to the La Liga outfit back in 2015 and has since proven his worth with 47 goals in just 105 games for the club, nine of which have come in just 15 league appearances this term to help the side to sixth place in the Spanish top-flight.
And his fine form in front of goal has reportedly attracted the interest of Pochettino and Tottenham, who have reportedly been keeping tabs on the DR Congo international throughout the current campaign, and as such are likely to be pleased with what they’ve seen.
And with Fernando Llorente struggling for form at the North London club this term, the Spurs chief could well be tempted to firm up his interest in Bakambu in next month’s transfer window in a bid to bolster his attacking ranks.
Landlord’s verdict: With 14 goals in just 21 appearances for Villarreal so far this season, there aren’t many strikers in better form than Cedric Bakambu at present.
The 26-year-old DR Congo international has scored goals at every club he has played at, so it’s hardly surprising to see interest in his services develop in the last few months, with Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham one side reportedly having kept tabs on his efforts so far this term.
Spurs still remain heavily reliant on the excellent Harry Kane, with summer signing Fernando Llorente doing little so far to suggest that he would be an adequate replacement for the Englishman were he to get injured, suspended, or possibly even leave the club in the coming windows.
Bakambu’s goal-scoring record though suggests that he could well be that man to finally take the weight off Kane’s shoulders, but whether Spurs are able to get a deal done next month remains to be seen.
