Real Madrid’s General Manager, Jorge Valdano, has given the strongest hint yet that Karim Benzema is leaving the club as they officially announced they were searching for a new ‘number 9’ to replace the injured Gonzalo Higuain.
Mourinho has made it clear for some time that he was looking elsewhere, but the biggest problem he faces is Valdano, who doesn’t want to sign a player that will possibly become un-required when Higuain comes back, saying that they need to sign a player ‘willing to lend a hand in the next six months’.
As a result of this, Emmanuel Adebayor, who Manchester City will possibly be willing to let go out on loan, has become the hot favourite to join Madrid.
However, were Adebayor not to arrive in the Spanish Capitol, then Mourinho has several other possible options according to Marca; listing seven other options.
Luis Fabiano, Mario Gomez, Lisandro Lopez and Miroslav Klose have all been linked with the ‘number 9’ role with Klose being a major possibility due to being out of contract in the summer. Other cheaper options outlined are Hercules striker Nelson Valdez, Bundesliga top-scorer Theofanis Gekas (who is already 30 and from what I’ve seen, awful) and former Real Madrid ‘Castilla’ striker, Adam Szalai who has been the star man for Bundesliga’s promoted surprise team, Mainz 05.
Any of those signings though would be longer-term and would have repercussions in order to fit Valdano’s plan, meaning someone will have to go. With Benzema’s bad form creating the problem in the first place, he might have to be the man to go and Spurs will be ready and waiting if so.
