Tottenham supporters have been more upbeat in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side beat Apoel Nicosia in their final Champions League group match on Wednesday, yet concerns over their Premier League form remain ahead of this weekend’s visit of Stoke City.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men have won just one of their last six league games to fall a staggering 18 points adrift of leaders Manchester City, a team Spurs finished eight points clear of in the top-flight last time out. Yet things haven’t gone to plan for the North London outfit this term, and as such Saturday’s clash with Mark Hughes’ Stoke at Wembley takes on even greater significance, what with Pochettino’s side sixth in the table and four points behind Liverpool in fourth. They do go into the game slightly more buoyant though after beating Apoel Nicosia 3-0 on Wednesday night, with goals from Fernando Llorente, Son Heung-min, and Georges-Kevin N’Koudou sealing an easy win.
Thus, there have been more upbeat Spurs fans in the Tavern in recent days, and they are likely to be intrigued and perhaps thrilled by a recent report from Diario Goel (via talkSPORT), which suggests that Pochettino’s men are in the chase to bring Real Madrid’s Luka Modric back to the club.
The 32-year-old made the move to the Bernabeu from Tottenham back in 2012, and has since gone from strength to strength with 231 appearances for Zinedine Zidane’s side, in which time he has bagged 12 goals and laid on 33 assists.
And with one La Liga title and three Champions League crowns to show for his efforts in the Spanish capital, the Croatia international has certainly gone onto much better things at Real, yet reports suggest that he has informed captain Sergio Ramos that he wants to leave the club in the summer.
And, as a result, reports suggest that Pochettino’s Spurs, as well as Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United, will seek to lure Modric back to the Premier League, although both may find it tricky overcoming Inter Milan in pursuit of the 32-year-old, as they are thought to be the front-runners.
But a chance to return to a happy hunting ground in Spurs could well appeal to the midfielder, in what could be a huge move from Pochettino’s side in the summer.
Landlord’s verdict: Midfielder Luka Modric certainly made his name while on the books at Tottenham between 2008 and 2012, but it has been at Real Madrid where he has taken it up another level.
Despite struggling to begin with, the 32-year-old has gone on to win one La Liga title and three Champions League crowns at the Bernabeu, yet reports suggest that he’s not entirely satisfied in the Spanish capital, and as such has informed captain Sergio Ramos of his desire to leave.
And ex-employers Spurs are one side reportedly interested in the Croatia international, alongside Inter Milan and Manchester United, in what would surely represent a huge statement of intent from manager Mauricio Pochettino as to his team’s ambitions for the coming seasons.
Although Modric is 32, he remains an outstanding midfielder and one that would certainly improve Tottenham, but whether they can seal a remarkable deal for the Croatian ahead of reported front-runners Inter remains to be seen.
