Tottenham Hotspur fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern are putting down their pints and taking in a huge piece of news courtesy of Goal.com.
It has been claimed that striker Jermain Defoe is set to miss at least three weeks of action with injury. Of course this could not come at a worse time for the club with the race for the top four hotting up dramatically, not to mention the Europa League around the corner.
Add to this the fact that Emmanuel Adebayor is still not back from the African Cup of Nations and you have a very worried Andre Villas-Boas. As our landlord points out, we knew that he was looking for a striker in the transfer window which has just closed, yet missed out on Leandro Damiao and did not manage to bring anyone else in.
The manager himself has lamented the Defoe injury yet tried to be positive and claimed: “It’s good news in the end because it could have been further damage to [Defoe’s] ankle.” He also felt compelled to make a quick remark about the Adebayor situation and told reporters “We’re trying to establish the best flight connections for [Adebayor].”
Spurs do of course have Clint Dempsey who will be returning from a trip to Honduras this week, yet with Dempsey seen as more of an advanced midfielder, AVB really does have a striking nightmare on his hands.
