Tottenham supporters have been in fine spirits in the Transfer Tavern in the last few hours after seeing their side return to winning ways with an impressive 2-1 success over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League last night, a result which secured them top spot in Group H.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men went into their clash with the German outfit off the back of a disappointing 2-0 defeat to North London rivals Arsenal on Saturday, but they bounced back admirably with a fine performance at the Westfalenstadion. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had given Peter Bosz’s side the lead but they were to be denied a first win of the campaign as second half goals from Harry Kane and Son Heung-min secured the three points for Pochettino’s side, and thus confirmed their status as group winners.
Thus, there have been many Spurs fans in the Tavern in the last few hours, although their mood could well be dampened by a recent report from talkSPORT. And that’s because they report that Pochettino’s men have suffered a significant blow in their quest to land reported target Andre Gomes from Barcelona.
The 24-year-old only moved to the Nou Camp back in 2016 but, although he played 30 times in La Liga for the Spanish giants last term, has struggled for gametime under Ernesto Valverde this time round, playing just 11 times in all competitions.
And with a World Cup to come with Portugal in the summer, the midfielder knows that minutes on the pitch are vital in his quest to not only make the squad but also make a difference in Russia, and Spurs are one side reportedly keeping tabs on his situation.
Yet it seems that the North London outfit have suffered a significant blow as reports suggest that Juventus are in pole position to land Gomes, as the player’s agent Jorge Mendes is reportedly in talks with the Italian heavyweights over a possible move.
And this is sure to frustrate manager Pochettino and the Spurs hierarchy, who may now have to turn their attentions to other transfer targets.
Landlord’s verdict: Andre Gomes has found minutes hard to come by under Ernesto Valverde at Barcelona this season, with the Portugal international starting just four games in all competitions so far.
So it’s perhaps unsurprising that the 24-year-old has been linked with a move away from the Nou Camp ever since the summer, with Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham one side reportedly interested in his services.
Thus, it’s not looking good for Pochettino and Spurs in their pursuit of the midfielder, although it remains to be seen whether Juve can indeed get a deal done for the Portuguese star.
