Twitter erupted yesterday with rumours suggesting Sigurdsson was spotted at Tottenham.
The Daily Mail suggested this earlier today but I can confirm that Tottenham ARE in talks with Sigurdsson in a move which will hijack any ‘deal’ elsewhere.
After Swansea were said to have completed a deal with Hoffeinheim for the permanent move of Gylfi Sigurdsson after a successful loan move since January, when Brendan Rodgers left the Welsh side the plot thickened. As part of Liverpool stealing the Swans’ manager who bought them to the Premier League for the first time, Liverpool were not allowed to make a bid for any Swansea footballer.
But, after it emerged that the deal was not confirmed, speculation saw Liverpool launch a bid to land the Icelandic midfielder in a move which controversially beat the Swansea system. However, now Tottenham are looking to “do the dirty” on Liverpool and snatch the 22 year old from the gates of Anfield.
Although Van Der Vaart is likely to leave Spurs this summer, making room for Sigurdsson in the Tottenham starting eleven, why would he leave his former manager Brendan Rodgers who he excelled under?
The Daily Mail and Sunday Express have reported that Swansea have admitted defeat in this transfer by ruling out his return to Wales, but, they have also reported that Sigurdsson is being offered a ” better package” at White Hart Lane and as a result is “seriously considering” the deal.
As a replacement for Van Der Vaart, I think he will excel and even outshine the Dutch attacking midfielder, but as a replacement for Modric, I don’t think that he has enough experience to replace a player who is attracting the talent of Europe’s top clubs.
