The Chelsea fans in the Football Transfer Tavern are not happy about this one…
Chelsea had it very good when Petr Cech was at the club. For the best part of a decade, the Blues could count on having a stalwart between the sticks; with the Czech Republic man keen to prolong his career in SW6 for as long as possible.
When the passing of the torch came, with Cech’s departure and Thibaut Courtois’ rise to prominence; the Chelsea fans in the Football Transfer Tavern were expecting the process to repeat itself.
However, the transition has been far from a smooth one, with Courtois typically failing to cover himself in glory in the same regard as Petr Cech did, alongside consistent question marks over the Belgian’s long term future at Stamford Bridge.
The Belgian has been linked with a move away on a number of occasions, with a return to Atletico Madrid often touted as his first choice destination; though thus far these rumours have failed to come to pass.
However, in a recent interview with Marca; Courtois has once again opened the door on a Chelsea departure.
When asked if he was longing for a Spanish return, Courtois replied: ‘Yes…I fell in love with Spain’.
He continued: ‘I have a contract at Chelsea (for) three seasons. In 2018, when (it) enters the final year…we will assess whether to renew or leave’.
Whilst he is not confirming an imminent departure, our landlord thinks that the very fact that he is discussing a Madrid return does not bode well for his Chelsea future.
Perhaps more worrying for the Chelsea faithful; should the Blues brass want to get a decent fee for the Belgian he will likely have to have several years remaining on his current Chelsea deal – meaning a sale could be coming sooner than first thought…
Lots to think about for Antonio Conte…
