Start him now: 85% of Tottenham fans want Pochettino to pick £36m-rated defender tonight

The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern are desperate for their side to bag a win this evening. A top-four finish is still in their hands, but another poor result could see Chelsea begin to breathe down their necks.

They drew with Brighton last time out, and so Mauricio Pochettino needs to do something to ensure the same doesn’t happen against the Hornets.

Naturally, his team selection is arguably the biggest influence in Spurs’ form, with the Argentine needing to get it spot on to give his side the best chance of victory.

One player that hasn’t been selected as of late is Toby Alderweireld. The Belgian isn’t in the good books with Pochettino, it seems, and that has been reflected by his lack of action.

This is something that fans want to see change, though, it appears.

We recently polled supporters on the prospect of Alderweireld, who is rated at a whopping £36 million by Transfer Markt, starting against Watford this evening, and it’s fair to say that the results were pretty conclusive.

According to that poll, the results of which can be seen below, a whopping 85% of Tottenham fans want to see Alderweireld return to the team, with the Belgian clearly very popular amongst fans.

Alderweireld hasn’t played much this season, originally owing to injury and more recently through personal choice from Pochettino, and it’s no surprise that alongside that, Spurs’ own defensive record has worsened.

Of course, his failure to sign a new contract could be having an impact, but Tottenham fans clearly are focusing on the present, and it’s tough to argue that on top form, Alderweireld isn’t amongst their best defenders.

Whether Pochettino will change his mind this evening remains to be seen, but Tottenham supporters are clearly hoping that he will.
