‘Statue needed’, ‘Legend’ – Newcastle fans on Twitter delighted as star mocks Sunderland

The Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern already love their 26-year-old left-back, Paul Dummett and if he keeps up his Tweets mocking Sunderland then he can’t go far wrong. The Blackcats lost 2-1 at home to Burton Albion on Saturday, confirming their second relegation in as many years. Dummett took to Twitter to wave goodbye to Sunderland after their fans goaded Newcastle last year with the line “Enjoy Burton” when the Magpies dropped into the Championship.

Dummett has been a Newcastle player throughout his entire career. Despite loans to Gateshead and St Mirren, the defender has spent his entire playing career at St James Park since coming through the club’s academy system. Now a regular starter in the senior squad, the fans have warmed to Dummett for his passion and intensity on the pitch. The club have come to form over the last few months, coincidentally, at the same time that Dummett made his return from injury.

The Welshman has now started the club’s last 11 games on the bounce, playing a big role in their current winning run that’s seen them claim all 12 points from their last four games. The incredible run of form has come at the right time for Rafa Benitez’s side who are now well clear of relegation and look destined for a top ten finish as they battle with Leicester and Everton for 8th place come the end of the season. Wherever the club finished this season, they’ll all be grateful that they’re not destined for Accrington Stanley and Luton Town away days next season like their Tyne-Wear rivals.
