Polish striker and Borussia Dortmund superstar Robert Lewandowski is set to make a move to the Premier League according to the Daily Mail, after a successful domestic club campaign and an impressive Euro 2012 display too.
Scoring the highest numbers of goals in the German League last season, Lewandowski helped his team accomplish the achievement of winning the German title, and consequently has seen him grab attention from 2 London clubs: Chelsea and Tottenham.
Being valued at £20 million, this will take a large chunk out of AVB’s summer transfer budget, which is said to be valued at £50 million. However, with the promise of any money from player sales being reinvested into the window, it is likely that Tottenham will spend in the region of £100 million. Broken down, the sale of Modric will help make up £30 million of this taking the total up to £80 million. Finally with the sales of Tottenham misfits including Dos Santos, Corluka, Kranjcar, Jenas and Pienaar, the total sum would surpass £100 million by a few million or so.
But the main question is, should Lewandowski go to the Blue or Lilywhite side of London?
Personally, I think that it would be more sensible for a player who can score or directly assist 30 goals in 34 appearances to play for a team where he can get first team football.
Could this be Chelsea?
Unlikely. Considering that Billionaire owner and current Chelsea manager Di Matteo has promised Fernando Torres a starting XI role in the forthcoming season, this talented 23 year old would just spend a considerable amount of time on the bench, and for someone of that talent, it seems a complete waste.
But why would he join Tottenham? Despite the lack of Champions League football, I still think that Spurs will be able to attract top quality players to the Lane.
Obviously there will be many eyes raised, but a new manager, a new “world class” training facility, an expected £100 million investment into the transfer window and a new stadium being planned would encourage many players to be involved in the start of an upcoming club.
Finally, with the likes of Caulker, Bale, Walker, Vertonghen, Sigurdsson and AVB all signing long term contracts, this means that the Spurs are looking for the long-term options which are available. With the average age of these players and manager working out to only 24.1 years, this shows that Levy would be very enthusiastic to get this deal done.
But, with the Borussia Dortmund chairman declaring that their star striker is not for sale, it will take a jaw-dropping to persuade the German champions to part with their prized asset.
