The Rangers fans in the Transfer Tavern are looking forward to a new era under Steven Gerrard, and they are hoping his influence at the club will enable them to go head-to-head with Celtic for the SPFL title next season.
Steven Gerrard’s first venture into football management is certainly a tough task to undertake, as Celtic’s dominance in Scottish football in recent years suggests the gulf in class between the Old Firm rivals is extensive to say the least. With that in mind, Gerrard will need to venture into the transfer market to bring a handful of quality players to the club in order to challenge the status quo.
According to to The Daily Express, Gerrard is interested in signing Liverpool’s 18-year-old prodigy Ben Woodburn this summer in order to bolster his options in attack. Woodburn is highly-rated at Anfield and has been tipped to eventually break into the first-team, but he has struggled for opportunities this season due to intense competition for places.
His lack of opportunity could persuade him to take a temporary loan move this summer and, considering how successful Patrick Roberts has been at Celtic, the prospect of moving to Rangers should certainly carry a strong appeal. However, Gerrard should also consider a move for Liverpool outcast Marko Grujic who recently completed a loan spell at Premier League bound Cardiff.
Grujic (valued at £4.5 million by Transfermarkt) was publicly praised by Neil Warnock during his loan spell for his combative performances and his creative spark in the centre of midfield, but it’s unlikely that Klopp will have a place for him at Liverpool next season despite his progress.
The Serbian international has shown flashes of brilliance which suggest he could develop into a complete midfielder with the right level of opportunity, so Gerrard should provide him with the perfect environment to develop by completing a season long loan deal for his services this summer.
