Stoke City fans in The Transfer Tavern playing pool are discussing comments made by their manager about one of their form players of the season so far.
The Daily Star is reporting that Mark Hughes feared losing Republic Of Ireland international Jon Walters during the summer.
Walters was at the centre of a contract dispute with the club, after it was decided that he should only be offered a new one year deal at the club.
In the end Hughes decided to offer the popular player a new two year deal, and with the form the player is currently in is so pleased he did. Speaking about his fear of losing Walters, Hughes said:
“It’s fair to say we got very close to a point where he may well have left in the summer. That was something I certainly didn’t want. But I’m delighted and in the end everybody is happy.”
“I’m not sure whether I can take any credit for it but I was aware that nobody had got back to him and just asked whether the contract was still on the table and where we were up to.”
“Jon is a low maintainence professional, a real leader who comes in and does his job and he’s a trigger for us in that he drags people along with him. He’s a leader. He’s got where he is by hard work, resilience and determination and no shortage of talent.”
The Stoke fans in The Transfer Tavern are delighted with Hughes’s comments, and are delighted that Walters is getting the praise he deserves.
