The Stoke City fans are gathered in The Transfer Tavern for a pool tournament this evening and discussing comments made by one of their defenders.
The Independent has revealed that Ryan Shawcross admitted he was spooked by Zlatan Ibrahimovic during his one only appearance for England.
The big Stoke defender came on with 16 minutes of the game remaining and was just left to standby and admire Ibrahimovic as he scored three of his four goals in the game during his disastorous spell on the pitch. Recalling his one England cap, Shawcross said:
“I’m the butt of the joke in my family, just because the 10 minutes I had in international football was ruined by one man. They are consistently saying that Zlatan ruined my career! I had a chance and I don’t think many other defenders have stopped him.”
“I was given 10 minutes to show what I could do and probably didn’t provide a good enough performance. I was against one of the best strikers in the world who was on a hot streak at the time and these things happen.”
The Stoke fans in The Tavern are disappointed that Shawcross has not had more opportunities to represent his country as they feel he is a player who always gives 110%.
