Arsenal have suffered a difficult start to 2018, with rumours of the sale of Alexis Sanchez compounded by shock defeats to Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth.
Long-serving manager Arsene Wenger is under immense pressure, and fans here in The Transfer Tavern are certainly a part of the ‘Wenger Out’ agenda, sweeping Gunners fans across the globe. However, they retain a sense of realism that the Frenchman is going nowhere, and just hope that Wenger pulls his finger out this month to bring in the required players to secure a return to Champions League football. If Sanchez leaves then replacements must be sought, with Bordeaux’s Malcom touted as a potential option. However Wenger will need more than just the one signing, and should also consider a swoop for Stoke City’s, Xherdan Shaqiri.
The former Bayern Munich man has performed to a consistently high standard since making the switch to The Bet 365 Stadium, but could be tempted to leave given the club’s dire situation towards the foot of the Premier League table. The Swiss has four goals and five assists so far this season from only twenty-one top flight games, a solid record for a player at Stoke City. If Shaqiri can achieve such stats with a struggling club, then his ilk would surely skyrocket should he be afforded an opportunity further up the table.
Arsenal are in desperate need of quality, and Shaqiri could certainly afford this at a very affordable price. New Stoke manager Paul Lambert may be tempted to offload the luxury player in order to be handed essential funds to improve his squad in other areas of the field ahead of their relegation dogfight, and he would have a tough battle on his hands in convincing the player to stay if an offer were to materialise. If Wenger wants quality and to keep fans onside, he must consider swooping for the 26-year-old.
