The Stoke City fans in The Transfer Tavern are having a friendly game of pool and discussing reports that one of their star performers this season is set to turn down a new deal with the club.
The Guardian is reporting that Marko Arnautovic has turned down Stoke’s first offer for new deal due to the wage offered, in what is believed to be a game of brinkmanship to the player.
Arnautovic has been a sensation for the club so far this season, and has become a firm favourite at the Brittania Stadium since arriving for £2 million from Werder Bremen back in 2013. But speaking about the players reluctance to accept the first offer on the table, Stoke boss Mark Hughes said:
“We have had conversations with Marko and that is ongoing. We’re working our way through the squad and where we feel we can offer deals to our players.”
“Marko is one of those players we’d like to do something with and it’s taking a little bit longer. It is what it is, but the intention is there to keep our good players if we can.”
Hughes knows that if the player does not agree a new deal soon that the club may have to sell him on whilst they can get the best possible price due to the player having just 18 months to run on his current deal.
Those Stoke fans in The Transfer Tavern would like to issue Arnautovic some words of advice that no one is bigger than the team, and not to expect the board to offer him ridiculous wages.
Stoke fans, how much is an acceptable amount to give Arnautovic? Let us know in the comments below!
