Tottenham supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern in recent times after seeing their side complete a great week with a much-needed 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace at Wembley on Sunday, thus moving them level on points with Manchester United in the Premier League table.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men may well have lost 1-0 to the Red Devils at the start of the week but they soon put that behind them with a wonderful 3-1 success over European champions Real Madrid on Wednesday night, a result which secured their passage into the last 16 of the Champions League. And although they were below-par against Roy Hodgson’s Eagles on Sunday, they got the three points thanks to an excellent second half strike from Son Heung-min, which was enough to draw them level on points with second place United in the Premier League table.
Thus, there has been a huge buzz among our resident Spurs fans in the Tavern this week, many of whom are already anticipating the North London derby against Arsenal in eight days’ time at the Emirates Stadium.
Nonetheless, there is plenty of things for those Tottenham fans lining up at the bar to get their teeth into during the fortnight’s interruption, not least a recent report from The Daily Mail which suggests that they are in the running for Hamburg starlet Jann-Fiete Arp.
The 17-year-old came up through the ranks at the Bundesliga outfit to make his senior debut for the club back in September of this year, when he came on as a late substitute in their 0-0 league draw with Werder Bremen.
However, it has been what he has done since then which has made many sit up and take note, as the striker netted in their defeat to Hertha Berlin and in their 3-1 victory over Stuttgart in his only other appearances for the club, thus underlining his credentials in front of goal.
And Arp should thus choose to link up with Pochettino at Tottenham ahead of the aforementioned trio, as the Argentine’s record with young players as well as the overall direction Spurs are heading in makes them a very desirable destination.
Ultimately, when one takes a look at the current Spurs team, it is littered with young players who have been given their chance by Pochettino, but more importantly they have been well managed and backed by the former Southampton boss.
The likes of Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Harry Kane, and more recently Harry Winks have all become a key part of Tottenham’s starting eleven in recent times, and all are likely to play a vital role in any success England may have over the coming years.
But Pochettino has to take great credit for giving them a platform to go and perform. Be it in the Premier League, Europa League, or other competitions, he hasn’t been afraid to back them as opposed to sending them out on loan (just look at where that is getting several of Chelsea’s starlets).
Not only that, but the case of Moussa Sissoko suggests that he’s even willing to give players another chance even if things haven’t gone particularly well.
The former Newcastle United midfielder was woeful for Spurs last term and it looked for all the world that he’d be out of the door over the summer, only for him to remain at the club, and indeed become a key part of the squad in the last few weeks after some impressive performances.
So not only does Pochettino give young players a chance, but he also doesn’t completely close the door on anyone, regardless of how badly things may get.
Add in Spurs’ improved displays in Europe this season, alongside a new stadium to come and a likely title challenge for a third successive campaign, and things are certainly looking promising for the North London outfit.
And for a young player like Arp, who is in the very early stages of what could well be a phenomenal career, linking up with the Argentine at an exciting Spurs, who will keep his feet firmly on the ground, certainly appears to be the best choice.
