Suarez ready to intervene in weird Stoke City deal

The punters in the Football Transfer Tavern can’t get their head around this one…

Glen Johnson has never been a particularly exciting footballer to watch, but he has often got on with what he is tasked – and typically performs as expected.

He would, therefore, be an unlikely candidate to be featured in what is undoubtedly the most bizarre transfer story of the year so far – but 2016 is continuing to surprise even our landlord.

According to the Daily Mail, Barcelona are ready to make a move for the English defender as a strange solution to their right-back woes. The Catalan giants have struggled on the right-hand side following the departure of Dani Alves – and it the Daily Mail are suggesting that Johnson is on their shortlist.

Just when you thought that this story couldn’t get any stranger – it does! The Daily Mail are also reporting that Suarez is ready to get involved in the deal – and is prepared to back Johnson to make the move.

Our landlord doesn’t even know where to start with this story. He can’t work out what’s stranger: the fact that Barcelona want Johnson – or the fact that Suarez is ready to give his ex-Liverpool teammate his seal of approval!

Johnson has always been solid – but even the Stoke City fans in the Tavern think that Barcelona might be a step too far. He is 32-years-old, after all – and he is certainly not in the best form of his life.

The 32-year-old defender has played a bit-part role for Stoke this season, having made just 3 starts for the Premier League outfit thus far. Johnson’s attacking play style would certainly suit Barcelona, but his stats so far this season do not really align with the Spanish giants’ philosophy.

This really brought up an audible laugh from the punters in the Tavern – many of which simply cannot see this deal going ahead.
